My life, My coding

My new VGT code seems to work, though I havne't had the truck insured so I haven't really put it through it's paces..

Working on a transmission lockup/OD box.. OD in my first gen has been acting all goofy, I'll see how it works out... trying to print my own board with toner transfer has caused me to lose a lot of hair and sanity!.. It looks like total garbage but I think it'll be good enough for a test run.

Well, I can't remember if I've mentioned it before.. THe Bosch H1000 pump.. with electronic fuel and timing racks... one just came up for sale.. rare as hens teeth.. I'm sooooo tempted!

Just put an 60/67mm HE351CW on my first gen, going to try it out today... see how it does.. seems to spool real fast!

So I've driven the first gen a bit with the HE351CW... it's an AWESOME turbo.. spools nearly instantly, pushes 45PSI, and I'm getting considerably better fuel mileage than I was getting with the 60/64/12 HX35/40 hybrid..  I used the same billet compressor wheel in both, so it all comes down to the exhaust side
Buddy tried the 9cm from an HY35 which looks really similar, but it's not sounding like that's performing all that great, would be good for a truck with closer to stock fuel though.

Here's a little vid for the sound.. sure responsive

Got another new toy I've been waiting to find for a long time.. This is going to open up lots of options!

I think I'm going to build this onto a 24V engine.. I just picked up some stainless Shied .120 24V p pump lines... they ought to do the trick

well, the rad in my first gen packed it in on me, while waiting on another one I had to put the dually back on the road.. it had the stock VGT on it.. was was coming up to overspeeding it at just 30-35 PSI boost and it was running out of air pretty quick.. for shits and giggles i'm just swapping the cold side to the 67mm because I"m lazy and that's easy to do, and I'll see if that helps a lot.. goign to bump the timing a bit too, try and reduce my haze at idle

Stock VGT was driving nice though, didn't complain about making 15PSI at 1200 RPM though it was a bit smoky down there.. giving it an oil change as well  while I'm at it

Well, Dad got another first gen, 5 speed, 90,000 miles, but rough miles.. I had to go over a mountain pass to get it, 5 miles of 17% grade with the trailer on taxed the dually's cooling system even at 40F... I was running like 25PSI boost the whole way up, 2nd gear.. I forgot I had an empty oil bottle by the coolant reservoir... Let me tell you how hot the turbo "cold side" discharge gets.. it gets hot enough to melt plastic!

I put a downpayment on a 1500 gasser first gen, XCSB 2wd, really nice shape.. I might put a 4BT into it, I think that would be a sweet little summer truck

Well, I finally got the biggest part of my H pump build in my hands... Now for the brainiac parts!

I got some Shied Diesel stainless  .120" P pump 24V injector lines, some Mahle 24V pistons, and the icing on the cake, I'm going to try the chinesium head studs... I got two sets, they seem alright by looking at them, and for $100/set delivered.. I'll give them a shot.. gotta be better than stock head bolts.

I got some datasheets for the H pump, and from my reading it's capable of 350 bar injection pressure, so I might not have to go with monster (expensive) 24V nozzles...

I do still have to find an atmospheric turbo I like, I'd like an S480 with a single scroll housing.. still debating if I want to do a HE351VE or the 351CW... would be nice to have engine brake.

On the transmission side, for now I have a single disc billet stock stall converter and a mild build 47RH... but I'm trading an old NV4500 for a 47RE that has a billet input with like 40K miles, it lost 2nd gear, so I'm thinking it broke the band strut... I'll steal the billet input from it.

Otherwise, it's calving time here again, got 3 bouncing baby boys

Guess it's time for a bit of an update, had a scorching hot summer where everything was on fire, followed by a wet fall.

Anyhow, I'm playing with the H pump.. some steep learning curves with sensors.. trying to do a lot of circuitry designs.. I think I have some stuff figured out, other stuff is still in the air

First gen is waiting for the 47RH to be put into it, 2nd gen is getting detuned a bit... Got a couple NV5600s waiting for rebuilds... I've been making lots of turbos

I'll try and post more when I can

Are you interfacing the H pump directly or replacing drivers ?

direct.. there are some things that make it difficult though.. like the rack position sensor is an eddy current sensor with 1 coil.. you need to feed it an 80khz sine wave which is the resonant frequency of the coil, and then read back the peaks of the wave, which will change significantly the amplitude you get from it..
So the first problem is reasonably generating and 80KHz sine wave.... even a square wave.. I tried with an arduino, and I fought with it to do it with the hardware timers and finally got that going, but it screws with the serial interface timing.. I found a chip (LTC1799) that's a super low parts count frequency generator IC, so I'll probably use that.. basically just needs 1 external resistor to set the frequency, so that's nice.
Turning a square  wave into a sine wave isn't too hard with an RC circuit, though you're kinda fixed to a certain frequency (+/- 10% anyhow) so if your truck wiring has a lot of extra capacitance or inductance, it could require changing out some parts
Lots of fighting  with Multisim SPICE models.. #$%# convergence errors whenever i used quite a few of the op amps there..found the OPA353 to work fairly nicely though and has the same footprint as several other op-amp
So you need an op amp to drive the coil with the sine wave with a little bit of power, then you need a peak detector, smooth out the peaks, and send it back to another op amp to get some more gain out of it before you can send it back to the ADC.
Then for the main coil drivers that control the rack/timing, I played with a few mosfets, found the IRF540 to work reasonably well, but the flyback diode (even a hefty one) doesn't like going much over 5khz before they generate a lot of heat..shouldn't be a problem though.
I put a .01 ohm shunt resistor to ground, another higher precision op amp and some filter caps and that should give me a pretty nice, linear current sense input

Well, things are busy around here with the cows, halfway done with the babies being born

Popped the head gasket in my truck last week, got oil in the coolant, lots of it.. guess 40 PSI boost at 1500 RPM and 20something degrees of timing isn't good.
Kinda felt like some of my  head studs weren't very tight, don't know if that's the symptom or the cause  though
