Title: Adding notch to turbo shaft for VR sensor pickup
Post by: 606lyfe on April 06, 2018, 11:39:03 AM

rx7man I'm looking in your direction.

Have a he351ve that for whatever reason doesn't have a notch or cut out on the turbo shaft for the VR sensor to work.

How much hassle is it to cut one in?

DIY job, or does it need some machine shop work / balancing.

When I got mine from Turbolab they said just grind one in, no rebalance necessary.. I still think they should do that, but I just used a diamond bit on a dremel and marked it from the old shaft.. works well...

Great info thanks

Will be having a tickle from the grinder ASAP then.

Don't suppose you have any reference pics? As don't have an oem shaft for reference.

Was going to go in 2mm deep by about 3mm wide

Not all heros wear capes - some just go out and flex their vernier calipers - thanks, will be very helpful.

I'll add some pics here when I get down to it for future reference

I'd rather have the cape than spandex BTW :P

Hahah.

Turbo apart this eve, pretty straight forward - gotta love a vband.

Will mark it up and hit it with the disc tomorrow and get her back together.

Turbine measures up as a 67mm - super hx40? Compressor is billet but stock 60/86 with extended tips.

10 blade turbine? It's probably the same one I have, which explains why it didn't have the notch in it... It should do well, a little slower to come on but MUCH better top end... put a 64 or 67mm compressor on it someday.

Notch is in, marked out from your measurements and went at with a tiny diamond dusted disc.

I wouldn't call it precision machine work, but hey it works.

Turbo shaft speed sensor now working.

Happy days.

Need to get on tuning up the turbo rpm curves - my little 3.0 6pot doesn't flow quite as much exhaust gas as a cummins

It's as good as mine looks!  Yeah, it'll take a bit to spool it.. In your application you might be better off with a stock wheel and housing.. time will tell :)
