Title: New build/no luck
Post by: Kookie on August 06, 2018, 12:00:38 PM
93 w250 reg cab, rebuilt 215 p-pump 24v h/o piston cummins engine with 370 marine camshaft, 7x11 injectors, 110  valve springs, bunch of pump goodies and 22* timing and 0.84 mild steel lines( had a set of stainless lines that were complete poop and would not seal up and dealing with warrenty, would not recommend poor quality)  backed up with a duel disk clutch and nv5600. Installed the HE351ve and the standalone 2.0 controller and went to play with it to find out the turbo has a bad actuator:( pulling turbo off and going back to old set up until I can buy a new actuator and also need to have machine work done for larger 67mm compressor wheel and 70mm turbin wheel that I have. Was looking to run truck on dyno next weekend but I guess no luck. Anyways if anyone is interested in my build I'm on YouTube lemmonAid cheap customs...shameless plug

It's good on the bottom end for more torque, could be I chose to run the h/o pistons from 02 vin7 engine... might back timing off to 18* for more friendly running. Also using a 6.7 aftermarket manifold made installing vgt much cleaner of a fit. Just finished fitting stuff up but having issues with the lil bb. So turbo is not being controlled and super laggy. Lucky truck is just a toy and not dd. Can spool the turbo with the vanes fully opened but takes a gental foot on to control smoke... currently in the process of wiring a bunch of 5v sensors with a cts2 to have all gauges in one screen....in all honesty I should of just swapped a 6.7 Cummins and bought efi live for what the project is turning into

I'm dealing with gremlins on my truck right now.. fuel gremlins this time... 5x16 injectors and one cylinder seems to be really weak, going to pop test them again and see if one is off... I'm looking at another truck and might put this one closer to stock-ish..

Sounds like you have a really sweet setup once you get it behaving!.. I have a '93 as well, but it's a slow truck.

Yes, still need to eventually get the turbo machined but want to start tuning it in stock configuration first. Eventually it will have a he551 non vgt, non wg turbo feeding it that I picked up from work off a cursor 12.9l off a quad track. It's a 71/109 compressor wheel, haven't measured the exhaust side yet

What did you set pop pressures at?? I've also experienced on some series of p/pumps a barrel will hairline crack internally  and cause lots of  weird running characteristics to eventually running on 5 cylinders

They're set to 285 bar for the 2nd gen 215 pump.. Pump was JUST benched at BD this winter... I set the first gen ones to 255 I think it was? My buddy put them in his and he says they run great.

Did you get your issue figured out? Was it an injector?

Nope, though I'm thinking it might be a bad intake valve.. I have soot in my intake.. grrrr... Installed new injector nozzles AGAIN, used the old ones on my 93 and they're working fine there..
I backed off my valve lash a bit and it seems to have helped a little (.012" intake)

I have to put my truck through a full inspection here (dickhead cop), so that's kinda on the back burner for now

Good luck with inspection.

thanks.. my truck is pretty mechanically sound, just lots of little stuff to do.. things like the clutch safety switch, cover the non-DOT fog lights, maybe do shocks, my road kills them in no time flat, I put new Ranchos in the back 2 years ago (30,000 kms) and I think they're done for already.. Might splurge and get Bilsteins

I know the feeling about shocks, I need to put new ones on my truck as well. I'm planning on rebuilding the front suspension and steering doing upgrades. I want to put new leafs all the way around as there starting to get sagged out and lift the front up about 2 -2.5 inches to level the truck out. Also thinking might put air bags all the way around or at least on the back, also I really need to build a set of traction bars, truck is scary to drive with axle warp under heavy acceleration lol

Well, I just put Bilsteins in my truck.. I put 140,000 kms on the truck, the KYB's that were in it in the front were still PERFECT, and I drive a rough road like a maniac.. Rancho shocks i put on the rear 2 years ago are leaking already

I know what you mean about the axle wrap, mine's really bad too and I'm looking at a traction bar setup as well, I already have the bushings and some of the tubing I need

Oh, if you want to level your first gen out on the cheap, do what I did, I took the rear leaves from a 2nd gen 1500, except for the top leaf, then used the first gen  top leaf and put the rest under them, I also added a caster wedge in there while I was at it and it really helped it track better,  The stock shocks were just a little too short after, so I figure it's about a 1" lift if you use the overload spring, if you were to keep the shortest stock one in there instead it would probably ride around the stock height.. I found it rides nice though

Interesting, the truck has overloads installed in the back.  previous owner always had a camper in the bed. I never measured it but it has a good rake going empty. With the trailer attached levels out and rides much better. I'm thinking of tackling all that stuff in the winter as well as welding new rockers and cab corners. Truck rusted through this year. Also the front cab mounts and rmdriver side floor need addressed. The bed is in great shape still with only minor work needed but no rust spots. I would like to eventually strip the whole truck to the bear frame and fully restore but enjoy toying with it to much to fully commit to that project need more space for such a project

I hear you there!.. I have a 93 as well, cab is in really good shape, no rust, but has one rear cab mount cracked up.. have a new box and new doors (my doors aren't bad, but they aren't good enough to repaint, drivers side hinge mount is buggered, passenger side door lock punched out)
I wanna do a complete repaint on it, Massey red, I'll keep the white but I might go with a pearl white, polar white, or something a little different

Sweet looking rig. I bought the truck about 8-9 years ago from a old couple that used it as a camping rig. Had 160000km on it with a new injection pump and injectors. The truck was very well taken care of and I wish at the time I would have been smarter and repainted it then as it had no body issues besides flaky paint. I was more interested in hot rodding so I converted it over to a p-pumped engine and drove it very hard to 300000km as a daily then 5th started to let go in the getrag. It sat for 2 years in the field until I had the time and money to buy the parts to rebuild a core nv5600 I picked up and install it.
