Title: Expensive day
Post by: Rx7man on February 21, 2016, 06:40:47 PM
Well.. it was an expensive day.. I broke down and went on an ebay/amazon shopping spree... 2 quad thermocouple amps, a dozen thermocouples (from china, they're CHEAP.. like $.73 each, shipped) of different styles for a few different projects, some Mosfet 4 channel outputs, and more stuff for displays.. A raspberry Pi 2, Xs300 expansion board, and HDMI display... I think I'll use the Mega with 3.2" screen for other things... I have enough projects.

Oh, and I ordered a whack of books for my dad too.

only problem with china thermocouple is takes about a month to get.
What thermocouple amps did you get? haven't ordered mine yet.
Been working on brake conversion for 65 ranchero. 2010 mustang rear brakes 11.8" and 2010 crown vic front 12" rotor
m-2300-g2 cheap kit for ford 9" 11.8" rotors $200 shipped on eBay or Tasca.
Ordered a 2014 Z06 radiator fan 600 watt made by Spal. Brushless 3rd wire speed control.

I have a month to wait, so I don't mind.  Thermocouple amps were the ones that someone posted here a while back.. ebay guy from California I think?  Mosfet output board from him too.

I bit the bullet and went with the $55 one... might save me a lot of regret, and it's capable of reading many types of thermocouples as a bonus.  I'll see how I like it and let you know when I get it set up...

I'm currently looking at putting 1 probe at the compressor outlet, one at the intercooler outlet, one on the exhaust manifold, and perhaps have one for engine temp... I'll see how it all pans out.

I might make a wood stove controller with the second one, and it might double as a 2 stroke tuned pipe tuning aide.. If I can get accurate temperatures at different points in the pipe I can get a better idea of the wave speed, and be able to create a new pipe from scratch without having as many test runs.
I'm sure I'll find a use for the second unit.. they're just too handy to have.

I want to control the air flow into it so that I can tell it to run hot for an hour after it 'catches', then throttle down, or keep the place at a consistent temperature.. I haven't thought it all through yet.. but it'll come to me

well if your going to get setup to control the damper. might think about about a propane relight.
they do that on large fireboxes as a option. Years ago I worked on one that had an oil burner in the fire box.
Thought about setting up a waist oil burner like my brother but figured it would be a good way to get in trouble.

I have thought of burning waste oil as well, and that is something I could incorporate.

Why would you get in trouble.. EPA?

I think carb outlawed it. One of those did.
There are restrictions on wood burning in the city's. but where i live half the homes burn wood.

To me, Carb, Epa, etc are all the same darned thing..  Waste oil burning requires a lot of air and high temperatures to burn clean

my brothers setup is clean after about 1 min.
Like a wood stove hot is clean.
Read about burning wood gas in a engine years ago.
surprising how many tractors and cars were converted during war time.

In Switzerland the entire garbage truck fleet is powered by the methane collected from the garbage

I haven't looked.  There's all sorts of forms of energy...

I do think it's pretty stupid to grow corn for ethanol while there's a single hungry person on the planet though.
