Title: New toy!!
Post by: Rx7man on January 06, 2016, 11:21:12 AM
My buddy was trying to clean out his garage.. he lives in suburbia and doesn't have much space.. so I picked up some toys from him

2 complete midget sprint car, and a partial one.
The complete one has a Datsun 2.0 "peanut" engine in it, MSD ignition, autometer gauges, I got lots of spare tires, rims, etc.. the partial one is frame and suspension components, a Ford Escort 1.6L (I think), and about 4 diffs with different gear ratios.

Though they're set up for circle track (only left turns), I plan on straightening them out and putting a rotary with a TH350 tranny and high stall convertor on it, perhaps with a VGT if I can find another one.. I know the rotary engine will eliminate it from eligiblity for competitive circle track racing, but I just did some math on what kind of 1/4 mile times I could do with it..
The cars are SUPER light, I can lift the front or rear ends, I don't think they're over 800 lbs... I think I can quite easily get 250-300 HP, and that works out to 1/4 mile times of 8.0 seconds at 167MPH!!  The local track they're talking about is a 1/8th mile.. It would be very rewarding to whip some muscle car arse with this thing.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to make it street legal too.. that would just be WILD

What do you think?

300hp I think you can make a little more then that. ;)

It would be the 12A engine, which has higher compression ratio.. and a streetport.  If it gets anywhere near an 8 second 1/4 mile I think my asshole will pucker up tightly enough for a while. The 3rd gen Rx7 I used to have made 375 RWHP at 11 psi, my buddy has it now, it's up to about 550 hp@25psi.. full bridge port, dowel pins, etc... I put about $10,000 into that mill.. it has the most awesome idle.. 1800-2000 RPM and a heck of a lope to it

my brother had a 12a on his dune buggy. That was fun to drive. He did blow up a 12a on a 250 shot of nos. apex seals were all busted up and destroyed the housings. I think it was pinging for along time.
My friend has a rx7 13b turbo he is using f-con tuner something like that. tried to get him to sell it and go ms3.
and dump his china turbo for a nice big holset. But his wife has other plans.

i think rotary engines are great for bridging the gap between turbine engines and piston engine.

My car had a Microtech.. I didn't like it much, but I wasn't the one tuning it... my buddy who bought that car previously had a 2nd generation Rx7 with a megasquirt 2.. it did pretty well.

The nice thing about diesels is they're a lot more forgiving to a bad tune than rotaries... a little overboost, too lean, too rich.. a diesel can handle it, a rotary.. not so much

I should actually look over the code for MS3.. when I first looked at it I wasn't used to C programming, it would make more sense to me now I'm sure, and could possibly apply some of that knowledge to Arduino (they probably have similar processors)

ms3x supports the leading and trailing spark out of the box.
I would highly recommend adding the knock modal. don't be like me :o

I would reuse that gasket, no issue

I think it's Kapok you should ask about how to fix it with some high-tack and form-a-gasket blue

only good thing is I did some chamber work since i had the head off. Stock they shroud the valves for smog.
picked up a lot. before 32psi at 5300 would max injectors. now 26 psi at 4700rpm.

When I built my new Cummins I did a lot of port work.. the castings are miserable from the factory, and the deshrouding and port smoothing *really* helped how freely the engine runs above 2500 RPM.. of course the new cam helped there too
