Title: What kind of workshop do you have?
Post by: Rx7man on May 12, 2015, 09:58:27 PM
Out of curiosity, wondering what kind of equipment and tools you have at your disposal...

I've got about a 900 sq ft shop, 12x12ft door, the mezzanine area is my living quarters, so I'm never far away from something to fiddle with.

Air compressor and a pretty full set of air tools, die grinders, impact guns, paint guns, sanders and the like.
Lathe, 4' bed, 8' swing, powered by an Allen bradley powerflex 40 VFD.. it's the cats meow.
Drill press
the usual array of wrenches, vise grips (for the fine work :P), jacks, etc
1 chinese MIG welder, 1 Lincoln (borrowed) MIG welder, 1 big Miller 250 amp buzzbox welder.

I *really* want a milling machine.. very sorely lacking here... Also looking at getting a TIG welder.. Missed a REALLY nice one for $1500 (it was a $9000 machine) on craigslist.

I don't have a workshop unfortunately, just a detatched garage with the usual's.

90gal air compressor, Miller 180 (220v) w/ aluminum spool gun. And just about anything under the sun for hand tools.

The 3600sqft garage is still occupied with a few cars and whatnot, but eventually it'll have a bridgeport first, then some lathe I can find at a auction or estate sale. At least the wood shop was moved over there.

Yep, I'm looking for a bridgeport mill as well.. I don't like the hobbyist ones, they are just junk, and don't cut worth a damn when you get a decent sized cutter on them.

You should have seen the old barn I used to work out of.. about a 5'6" door you'd bang your head on, a couple railroad ties for a work bench, and a dirt floor... certainly not for rebuilding auto trannies!  In my Rx7's I've swapped a lot of engines out in a driveway, if possible in the rain, without engine hoists... I don't miss those days at all... I"m spoiled now.

I found a milling machine.. but it's a little excessive... buddy of mine bought it at an auction, and he doesn't know why, so I called him up and asked about the details of it

6'x30" bed, German made
it weighs 12,000 lbs and is 8 feet high, 10 hp 480V 3phase motor

Yeah, I don't even have the equipment to move it off a trailer here!

I'm hoping I get to pick up some stuff from the mechanic workshop at Heinz, they are leaving California and my close friend may land the contract to put the building back to 4 walls

I worked at Heinz in Ontario... what the heck are they leaving cali for?  no tomatoes?

There's nothing like a mill and a lathe to help you make good parts... A TIG welder is nice but MIG is sufficient for most things, Oxy acetylene if that fails, brazing can be nice.

They got bought out recently, and California makes little to no profit, so its going to get cut.

Wow, that's surprising.. though these days it seems to happen all the time... Wonder who bought them out.. Nestle? Cargill? Lever?
